Chapter One

What the Evidence Says

The Story

Ordinary places.
Extraordinary terror.

When people begin disappearing without warning, independent researcher Claire Mercer and her young protégé, Tessa, investigate a growing series of impossible eyewitness accounts.

From an apartment hallway to a crowded transit center and a college football stadium, ordinary places become scenes of extraordinary terror. But when Claire herself vanishes, the mystery becomes devastatingly personal. Her closest friend Martha struggles with the uncertainty of her disappearance, while Tessa continues the investigation as the phenomenon escalates into a national crisis.

With no clear explanation, no identifiable threat, and no way to predict who might disappear next, the survivors must confront a frightening possibility: the world they have always trusted may never have been safe.

The World

It happens in ordinary places.

That’s what makes it work. No abandoned mansions, no graveyards, no warnings painted on the walls — a third-floor apartment landing, a concourse that empties after full time, a pedestrian bridge between two hospital buildings. The places you walk through without thinking, every single day.

Single black suitcase abandoned in a long, empty modern corridor with fluorescent lighting and glass partitions

Site 01 — The Transit Center

A bag with nowhere to go

Long dimly lit hallway with framed artwork on both walls, dark carpet, and a red EXIT sign glowing at the end

Site 02 — The Cinema

Dark corridor with fluorescent ceiling lights and floor-to-ceiling windows showing a nighttime cityscape with illuminated buildings below

Site 03 — The Skybridge

It doesn’t look wrong. That’s the problem.

Tone

No creature revealed. No method of protection. No explanation offered.

The horror is psychological: ordinary places, ordinary light, and a phenomenon that leaves behind nothing but what people say they saw.

Characters

A researcher, her protégé.

A methodical investigator, a young protégé learning to trust her own judgment, a friend living with the consequences — and the neighbour who saw it first.

The Researcher · Late 40s

Claire Mercer

An independent researcher specializing in memory, perception, and unusual eyewitness accounts. Intelligent, methodical and skeptical of unsupported conclusions — with a dry sense of humor. She does not dismiss the supernatural out of hand; she carefully separates what people observed from what they concluded.

The Protégé · 23

Tessa

A psychology student who becomes Claire’s intern. Intelligent, attentive and determined, and willing to challenge Claire’s cautious approach. Following Claire’s disappearance, Tessa continues the investigative work while developing her own judgment and independence.

The Friend · Late 40s

Martha Sullivan

Claire’s best friend of twenty years, a former professional tennis player who now teaches the game. Warm and quick-witted, Martha represents the emotional consequences of unexplained loss. She does not become an investigator.

The Witness · 73

Meg Bosworth

An independent, observant apartment resident who witnesses the mysterious disappearance of her neighbour, Laura Bennett, during an ordinary daytime conversation.
